The end of baseball

For as long as I can remember, baseball has been my favorite sport since I was introduced to it. I can still remember my mom and dad helping coach Tee-ball, my dad throwing me batting practice throughout little league, the home run derbys with my friends throughout high school on hot summer days.
We recently had a game against Salem State College, and my best friend and the opposing pitcher, Al Miner, was on the team. We have been best friends and have played baseball together ever since Little League. He pitched the first game, but in the second game, he was lucky enough to get a pinch hit at bat in the seventh inning. As I am walking to first base, he calls me over and tells me that he is either going to strikeout or hit a homerun, as he said he was going to swing out of his shoes. In his at-bat, he hit a blooping liner to left field, and as he rounded first base, I gave a laugh and sarcastically asked him, “has the ball landed yet?” Standing there with the kid who I played baseball with my whole life, I finally realized that my baseball career was coming to an end this year.
Transferring here to MCLA my sophomore year was a great decision. I have had countless memories with the baseball team, from Florida trips, to gym practices, to pool workouts.
It was only fitting that in our last home game of the regular season we kicked Springfield’s ass, and we did it with the bats. It was also awesome to see Steve DeSantis get his first career hit. I saw Steve earlier that day and asked him if he was excited for his first career start. He responded to me saying, “No, I’ve been shitting myself all day.” So it was awesome to see him get his hit in his first at-bat and see everyone stepping out of the dugout and cheering for him wildly.
This team is something special and has the talent and mindset to do something special. So as I prepare for the MASCAC Tournament today and this weekend, I wish my teammates the best of luck and tell them to work hard and we will achieve what we have been working toward for four years and fill that banner up in the Campus Center gym.
