Natalie Gelman perfomed her unique brand of folk music as part of SAC’s Music Box program on Saturday night.

Gelman does more than perform scheduled shows, however. She performs in the streets and subways of New York City, and around the country with her guitar case open for tips of any sort. She enjoys unusual tips, and lists several on her website.

After she released her self-titled debut album, she rollerbladed her way up the east coast, from Miami to New York City, performing to raise money for charity along the way. Being hit by a car — twice — didn’t stop her.

Gelman has been featured in The New York Post and the front page of the New York Times. The Post gives her CD four out of four stars, calling it “Simply terrific.”

Her performance at Sullivan Lounge was followed by a meet-and-greet, which lasted about three hours. During the show, Gelman held an impromtu raffle, auctioning off a bowl she had made out of an old vinyl record.

In addition to her folking singing influences, Gelman also has classical training. She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts, and went on to the University of Miami. There she earned a Bachelor of Arts in vocal performance.

Gelman’s music can be heard on her MySpace page, www.MySpace.com/NatalieGelman. She also has her own website at www.NatalieGelman.com.
